How To Make a Simple Clay Base for Your Sculptures.

This simple clay base is made from clay scraps and ground up in my $5.00 food chopper!

A food chopper is a handy asset to have in your tool inventory. This one I found at the Goodwill store, still in the box. You really need to prowl around in Thrift stores. Amazing what you can find.

This wonderful idea is from +Maureen Carlson's book How to Make Clay Characters. I bought mine from Amazon. You'll find that Amazon has the best prices of craft books. Look for my reviews on her books in the near future. I have three and love them all.

Maureen  chopped her clay finer and made a beautiful, neat base. Neat is not in my vocabulary so mine is chopped more like pebbles. Take a small amout out of the chopper and start pressing it together. Keep adding until you get it the size and shape you want.

Press your sculpture gently, or to make it even sturdier, add a small wire in the bottom of sculpture and then press it into the base. Bake as you normally do.

To see some of my bases go to Creation In Clay.

Have a Happy Day,
Barb
