Enjoying Green in a Cold, Brown Winter

In the middle of a very cold, brown winter, I always have cheery green in my house.
Tillandsia/Air Plants always are green. Inside your house never needs to look like the dreary outside. Of course if you live in sunny California or Florida, I am green with envy!

These pictures are of a beautiful Air Plant that has just finished blooming. These pictures are of it in bloom. What is nicer than a plant in bloom in the middle of winter? I have mounted this streptophylla x brachycaulos on a light piece of cork bark.

Meanwhile I am knitting away on my looms. I so want to help Veterans get a companion dog from Pets for Vets. So far I have made 3 hats and 1 scarf. Soon they will be on my Artfire studio. When you buy one, the proceeds will be donated to this wonderful cause. All monies except for the fees Paypal charges and the postage will go to Pets for Vets.

Have a happy day,
Barb

Loom Knitting for Pets for Vets - Want to Help?

The first knitted hats are just about finished and I am now working on a beautiful scarf. I am so excited about helping Pets for Vets. The more I read on their site, Pets for Vets, the more I want to help this very deserving cause.

Pets for Vets is helping.

Our goal is to help heal the emotional wounds of military veterans by pairing them with a shelter dog that is specially selected to match his or her personality. Professional animal trainers rehabilitate the dogs and teach them good manners to fit into the veteran’s lifestyle. Training can also include desensitization to wheel chairs or crutches as well as recognizing panic or anxiety disorder behaviors.

It’s win-win.

Needy shelter dogs receive a second chance at life while giving our returning soldiers a second chance at health and happiness. The bonds of friendship formed between man and animal have the power to ease the suffering of our troops when they return from overseas.

If you knit or crochet and want to help, please let me know. Email me at barb1839@ymail.com  There is no way that by myself can I raise lots of money to help our Veterans.

Have a Happy Day,
Barb

What I am doing with a Gift from a Stranger

A nice thing happened to me a few days ago. And what I am doing with the Gift from a Stranger.  This has been on the news, but, never thought it would happen to me.

While grocery shopping a lady came up to me and handed me a twenty dollar bill. When I asked why, she said no catch, just greet people with a smile.

That $20 sat on my desk for several days. I thought of giving it to someone else, but how to pick someone? Then Michaels ran a big sale on yarn. This is the way to give back! I used that $20 to buy yarn and now am launching my loom knitting for my favorite charity.

Pets for Vets is it! Pets for Vets provides companion dogs for Veterans.  These are not service dogs, but are pets that have been rescued. Thedog rescues the Vet and the Vet rescues the dog.  A great win, win!

I have two rescued dogs - Andy and Hannibal. I lost my husband almost two years ago and while my children have been wonderful, these two dogs are with me 24 hours a day. Not only do I take care of them, but they take care of me.

As I get a hat or scarf  finished it will go on my Artfire studio - Now Thats Unique. Look for Shop Section - Loom Knitting. As long as I can I will furnish 100% of the costs with the exception of the shipping. Monies will go into my Paypal account and will be paid out to Pets for Vets through my Paypal account.

Now it is time to go knit!

Stay Warm,
Barb

What To Make in a Cold January

I hope you will ignore the fact that it has been so long since I have posted. No sense in boring you with excuses.

It is a very cold January. It is not a safe time to ship Tillandsia/Air Plants. Plants, to me, are just one step below my dogs. Plants are live, breathing things - they just don't have brains. I cannot take the chance of a plant freezing to death, because of my shipping in this weather.

And after such a busy Christmas season of making clay items, I have decided to not make one thing clay in January!

What better thing to do when it is so cold is to loom knit scarves and hats! Now I cannot possibly wear all I make so I am toying with offering them for a donation to charities. My problem is I am torn between several very worthwhile charities.

Being an animal lover, I have been following a family that take in neglected and unwanted horses. It has grown beyond their expectations and is very expensive.

With a Grandson and his wife both being in the army - Dogs for Vets is also very dear to my heart.

Your input would be appreciated. Have your own favorite charity? Please share with us and the reason you love this charity.

More tomorrow

Have a great day,

Barb

New Name on Artfire - NowThatsUnique

I have just taken a big leap and changed the name of my Artfire Studio. The name, Creation-in-Clay, was great when all I sold was clay items. But now that I have added my second love - Tillandsia Air Plants - the name was to confining.

New name is: Now That's Unique. What do you think? Air Plants are unique and polymer clay OOAK items are certainly unique.

It is so cold here and getting colder. It is supposed to start sleeting and then turning to snow around noon. Looks like I will not make it to the Tulsa Flea again. If the weather people are correct it is going to be really bad tomorrow and I set up on Friday. I am too chicken to drive on ice, sleet or snow and the ones who do think they know how! Betsy, (my car) doesn't  have any dents and is not wanting any.

While snowed in I will be adding lots to Now That's Unique. Please stop by and give a look. New URL is: http://nowthatsunique.artfire.com

Have a Great Day and stay warm,

Frustrated at Trying to Sell on Amazon

Sorry I haven't written anything in a month! I have been so busy and frustrated at trying to sell on Amazon. Great place to buy, I know, but it is sure hard to get accepted to sell. If you have items to sell that have a barcode and UPC's it is easy. No barcode? Hah!

Obviously Amazon would rather have the big companies and manufactured goods. Small business that make OOAK or sell plants that do not have barcodes are not wanted.

You have to apply for an exemption. I did this twice. All I got back was a lot of gobbly-gook. After four weeks and much work, I gave up.

Now I am getting emails daily wanting to help me sell my items on Amazon. Different emails from different departments, none knowing what the other one is doing.

Oh well, enough of this, I could rant and rave for an hour!

Welcome home Tyler! This is my Grandson who has been in Afghanistan leading patrols. His plane landed Sunday. His wife Cathy is also in the Army, may be going to Afghanistan in the spring. Thank you guys for your big sacrifice for us all!

Have a Happy Day,
Barb

To Mist or Not To Mist Tillandsia Air Plants

When I started collecting Tillandsia Air Plants, I was told, like many of you: "Just mist once a week." Well guess what? The plant that is almost impossible to kill - I killed!

Looking back, I did not kill those plants, the person who sold them to me did. Think about it. Many of the varieties come from the rain forests. I don't think it just does a mist once a week.

What about the ones that come from the desert regions? They live in very dry conditions and survive. True. But when it does rain it is a soaking hard rain.

Air Plants adapt to both kinds of conditions. But they don't adapt to no water at all! And, most air plants are now grown in greenhouses in Calif. or Florida. They have adapted to this controlled climate.

Ok, you don't just give your plants a light mist but a heavy drenching mist. But what happens to that heavy mist? It rolls down the leaves and into its base where it sits and causes the air plant to rot. You don't necessarily see this rot, but your plant dies.

Another thing I don't like about misting is that it mists everything around it. Your table, window, drapes, etc. Now you have unsightly water spotting to clean up.

The moral of this story is - don't mist.

Fill a bowl of water and let them soak for about an hour once a week. If the humidity is low, like in the winter when the heat is on, soak them every 4-5 days.  Look at your plants. Some may need more or less watering. Treat them as individuals and not as a group.

Most important is to prevent rot. When you take your plants out of the water, gently shake holding them upside down. Lay them on their sides to completely dry. Don't put them back into the container you keep them in until they feel dry to the touch.

Well, I hope you now have a better understanding about misting. I will be glad to answer any question you might have. Just leave it in the comment section.

Have a Great Day,
Barb
